Different types of Hot Water Systems on the Sunshine Coast

There are various types of hot water systems and here is a quick overview of the most popular ones:

Electric Hot Water Systems

Electric hot water systems are the most popular ones. They work similarly to an electric kettle, with a heating element built into the system. Hot water is stored at a constant temperature in an insulated storage tank and as you consume hot water, the tank is refilled and cold water is heated to provide a constant supply.

An electric hot water system is normally the least expensive to buy and install, however in the long run the cost will be higher than other systems, especially if it runs on a continuous (24-hour) rate, due to the need for electricity.

Gas Hot Water Systems

Gas hot water systems are very similar to electric hot water systems. Their major difference is the heat source: a gas element, whether LPG or natural gas, is used in the gas systems.

Gas hot water systems are more efficient than electric ones as gas is cheaper than electricity, making the system more cost-effective in terms of operation. While operating gas hot water systems are usually less expensive, they usually cost a bit more upfront.

One advantage of this type of system is that you don’t have to worry about ‘off-peak’ pricing. However, if your system is not connected to the grid and runs exclusively on gas, you have to keep an eye on your bottles, so you don’t get caught without hot water by surprise.

Solar Hot Water Systems

Solar hot water systems consist of solar collector panels and a storage tank. The water is heated through the solar energy collected by the panels and stored in the insulated tank.

This type of system is usually installed with an auxiliary energy source, such as electricity or gas, to ensure the system provides hot water even on the days that there isn’t much sunlight.

Just as a reference, a four-person family requires around four square metres of solar collector surface (two panels) and a tank capacity of at least 300–360L.

Solar hot water systems require higher investment and specialised labour when compared to traditional gas and electric hot water systems. However, a well-chosen system can pay for itself in the long term, resulting in low operating costs and energy bills.

Heat Pump Hot Water Systems

A heat pump heats the water using renewable energy, taking the heat from the environment, eliminating the need for solar panels. As a result, these systems are often known as ‘air-source heat pumps’. Despite the fact that they need energy, these systems are more efficient than traditional water heaters. They have the potential to save money and energy while also lowering glasshouse gas emissions.

Heat pump water systems save money in the long term, are more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly but the upfront costs are higher.

However, this type of water system is not suitable for areas with average low temperatures.

Hot Water System Repairs and Maintenance

Frequently Asked Questions

The capacity of your system will be determined by your daily consumption. The average daily hot water consumption in Australia is 76l per person. If you multiply this number by the number of people in your house, you can have a preliminary estimate. Of course, this would be just an initial reference, as the real hot water consumption will have to consider other factors such as features from the house and habits of the households.
The optimal temperature for hot water storage is 60°C. According to the Plumbing Code of Australia, that’s the minimum storage temperature a system should be set, in order to prevent the growth of bacterias, such as Legionella, which can cause a pneumonia-type illness called Legionnaires' disease and a mild flu-like illness called Pontiac fever.
Don’t mistake storage temperature for delivery temperature. 60°C is the optimal temperature for storage, but at this temperature, the water can be extremely dangerous and cause serious scalds. For this reason, the hot water delivery temperature should be regulated and delivered at a much lower temperature. The standard delivery temperature is 50°C but it can vary depending on the facility and the water outlet points. For example, 45°C is the maximum water delivery temperature for childcare and schools. On the other hand, appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers may require water at 60°C to operate more efficiently. Therefore, it is always recommended to have your hot water system installed by a professional, to ensure safe and optimal water temperatures for each area of your home.
Tempering valves regulate the water temperature to ensure the water is delivered at an appropriate and safe temperature. It mixes the hot water coming from the storage tank (usually at 60°C) with cold water to reduce the temperature (usually to 50°C) before it reaches the outlet. In order to comply with the (AS3500), tempering valves are required for all new builds and the majority of renovations and hot water system replacements, with a few exceptions, where they are not mandatory. However, even when they are not a requirement, it is always recommended to install a tempering valve in your hot water system for safety measures.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I trust this company & highly recommend them. Having moved into a property that needed a lot of work & having used a lot of different tradies in the last couple of years. These guys are definitely the best! Our AC split system developed a fault & needed replacing. Fault diagnosed one day, quote sent out the next and 1 week later new AC replaced. They are friendly, efficient and a professional team. We also had an additional outdoor electric socket installed all on the same day. Great service!! We couldn’t be happier. Thanks to the whole team at Tenmen Electrical.

I had an air conditioning unit installed and the service was amazing. The electrician went out of his way to accomodate my requests, explained everything along the way and the do's and don'ts to keep it running efficiently (cleaning filters/handy hints etc). The professionalism of this company was fantastic. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for an air con installation.
