Different types of Hot Water Systems on the Sunshine Coast
There are various types of hot water systems and here is a quick overview of the most popular ones:
Electric Hot Water Systems
Electric hot water systems are the most popular ones. They work similarly to an electric kettle, with a heating element built into the system. Hot water is stored at a constant temperature in an insulated storage tank and as you consume hot water, the tank is refilled and cold water is heated to provide a constant supply.
An electric hot water system is normally the least expensive to buy and install, however in the long run the cost will be higher than other systems, especially if it runs on a continuous (24-hour) rate, due to the need for electricity.
Gas Hot Water Systems
Gas hot water systems are very similar to electric hot water systems. Their major difference is the heat source: a gas element, whether LPG or natural gas, is used in the gas systems.
Gas hot water systems are more efficient than electric ones as gas is cheaper than electricity, making the system more cost-effective in terms of operation. While operating gas hot water systems are usually less expensive, they usually cost a bit more upfront.
One advantage of this type of system is that you don’t have to worry about ‘off-peak’ pricing. However, if your system is not connected to the grid and runs exclusively on gas, you have to keep an eye on your bottles, so you don’t get caught without hot water by surprise.
Solar Hot Water Systems
Solar hot water systems consist of solar collector panels and a storage tank. The water is heated through the solar energy collected by the panels and stored in the insulated tank.
This type of system is usually installed with an auxiliary energy source, such as electricity or gas, to ensure the system provides hot water even on the days that there isn’t much sunlight.
Just as a reference, a four-person family requires around four square metres of solar collector surface (two panels) and a tank capacity of at least 300–360L.
Solar hot water systems require higher investment and specialised labour when compared to traditional gas and electric hot water systems. However, a well-chosen system can pay for itself in the long term, resulting in low operating costs and energy bills.
Heat Pump Hot Water Systems
A heat pump heats the water using renewable energy, taking the heat from the environment, eliminating the need for solar panels. As a result, these systems are often known as ‘air-source heat pumps’. Despite the fact that they need energy, these systems are more efficient than traditional water heaters. They have the potential to save money and energy while also lowering glasshouse gas emissions.
Heat pump water systems save money in the long term, are more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly but the upfront costs are higher.
However, this type of water system is not suitable for areas with average low temperatures.
